Cardon Copy takes the fliers we all see posted around our neighborhood, redesigns them and then replaces the original flyer. I love the concept behind this work, it just seems like a lot of fun. I wonder what the original person who posted the fliers think when they see the new look...

Veasey is an xray photographer. He built a $200,000 concrete building for his xray machines. After the image is taken, the film is scanned and completed by Veasey's team. I am fascinated with the variety of subjects that Veasey picks to xray.

Made from over 200 xrays, 26 of these were used for the handshaking skeletons

For this image the skeletons were added to the xray of the bus. Veasey even separately xrayed the fedora (on the man with the newspaper).

This was the one image I recognized of Veasey's work.

Brad Woodfin

Woodfin paints animals. I do not find this to be particularly exciting, except for the fact that he has a series entitled The Holy Goat. Woodfin definitely gets points for that! Also included in the series are paintings done on antique books. The books are the most interesting part of the work, besides the title of course, adding a strange relationship between the book, the book title and the pictured goat. While looking at Woodfin's work I liked what Meighan O’Toole of Juxtapoz Magazine said about the work,

"Brad Woodfin really likes goats. At that is what we can only assume from looking at his intimate portrayals of...goats."

Hutchinson has a couple of related series of photographs revolve around her relationship with her significant other. The fist series is called why am i marrying him? and consists of images that Hutchinson says documents her boyfriend's personality.

The second series is entitled model husband. Hutchinson draws from artists who used their wives as subject to add a twist to the idea of art in relationships.

Subway Art Gallery Opening

This must have been real fun! Improv Everywhere had created a gallery opening at the 23rd Street subway platform in Manhattan. They placed placards next to objects like electrical boxes and pipes, etc, and made them art. The gallery included a bar, a coat rack, and a cellist.

So went shooting with Montana last night and we had another adventure in Hollywood. However, there were no fighting coyotes this time, or deer, or cops. I was just happy that I got to teach Montana how to use the timer on her camera. This was a nice change as it seems Montana is always there wondering what the hell I am doing as I fumble around on Photoshop.

McMillan uses xrays to make these beautiful images of plants. They are all 8x10 contact prints of plants McMillan has gathered herself. McMillan began this type of work after photographing the research collections at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. I love the little unseen details that are highlighted in the work. It just makes you think about all of the things you cant see in all types of objects, everyday or otherwise.

Howalt has these cool car crash studies that center on either abstraction, airbags or interiors. I really like the abstractions because just seeing the images, I had no clue what I was seeing. You just see really beautiful lines and shadows, sometimes different colors. The images are just fascinating to look at and try to decipher.

Chris Hornbecker and Cinco

In a collaborative project, Hornbecker photographed various artists from Portland. Driven by what they call the Inside Light, the subjects are photographed with a reflection of a word, chosen by them, that reflects their creative process and identity. The images are really interesting to view as the reflections really make the images true portraits that capture more than just physical image. The final book includes names of the subjects, their profession and an explanation of the work they chose.

Buelteman makes these great photograms that initially reminded me of James Welling and his colored nature photograms, but seeing more of his work I have to say that I like Buelteman's much better. I was really interested in finding out how Buelteman was able to make these images and I found this:

"His technique is quite complex and dangerous, it’s based on Kirlian photography. He places flowers and leaves on a color transparency film, on top of that he lays plexiglas with a sheet of metal in between, floating in a liquid silicone. Then he hits everything with an electric pulse which causes the coronas and outlines to appear on the film. The last step he needs to do, is hand-painting it with a white light coming from an optical fiber. It can take up to 150 attempts to get this right."

Treacy's series Them features clothes that Treacy makes from items he finds in the woods, the trash, etc and then restitches into a new suit. It's kinda gross to think about where those clothes have been before he got to them. I guess the idea is interesting, I just cant help but think that every image immediately makes me think of a serial killer. A Buffalo Bill or Leatherface kinda project.

Bobby Neel Adams

Adams has interesting portraits in a series called Family Tree. He photographs two family members, father - son, mother - daughter, etc, then prints them and by hand he will tear and glue the portraits together into one image. Adams uses this same method in his Age Maps and Couples series. The images are initially interesting to look at, but they dont really hold my attention. While this idea may have been done before, I am interested in his process and how Adams does not use photoshop to create these works.

Erlich creates the most trippy installations. I would love to see them in person! Even looking on his website you can't get a sense of what the work is like in just one image. Swimming pools where you don't get wet, non-reflecting mirrors and plenty of other crazy setups. I highly recommend checking out his site.

Ariana Page Russell is a strange photographer. She has dermatographia, a condition in which one’s immune system exhibits hypersensitivity, via skin, that releases excessive amounts of histamine, causing capillaries to dilate and welts to appear (lasting about thirty minutes) when the skin’s surface is lightly scratched. This allows her to painlessly draw patterns and words on her skin, which she then photographs. In addition to portrait style images, Russell also will make prints of her skin, cut up the prints and fashion them into "wallpaper." Her work is interesting, but I also find it a bit creepy. The last two are my favorites from what I have seen of her work.

Kasurinen is a strange pop culture artists most known for her collection of My Little Pony sculptures. While they are interesting, as they are constructed into mostly fictional characters from Star Wars to KISS there are some strange creations. While I am not sure that these are part of the fine art world, they are entertaining with titles like My Little Cthulhu and My Little He-Man.

I have seen some of these silhouette works and I could never find who the artist was. Finally I have found them, it is Wilhelm Staehle. More silhouettes can be found at Silhouette Masterpiece Theatre. He has the kind of cynical and disturbed humor that I love and many people do not understand. I think what really draws me to Staehle's work is the vintage-y, antique store like imagery that he uses. I just want to post all of the silhouettes, but I think this is a good collection of my favorites.

Artists to Look Up

So I had a little trouble finding Tonk, that took forever and then I felt like there wasn't enough images to get a sense of their work. I found that I have seen some of David Shrigley's work and I really like the casual humor his photographs have. They are humorous, but they are not aggressive, more subtle, but still very apparent. John Clang seems to have a very diverse portfolio of his work available on his website. I kinda go back and forth as I go from image to image. I am not quite sure how I feel about his work yet.

On Web Urbanist I came across this post about ossuaries (place that houses bones) around the world. While it is kinda creepy that someone decided to use human bones to decorate chapels and other buildings, some of them are quite beautiful. The ceiling in the picture below is from the Chapel of Skulls in Poland and I love it.

I like how they decided that human bones were not enough, but they still needed to add those gaudy little cherubs to get the full effect.

I thought this was kinda cool when I came across it. Sebastian Campion has placed a giant 3d cursor in a city square. The cursor is movable and has GPS tracking to see where the cursor is moved to. The public was encouraged to sit on or move the cursor and then could go to the website to see how the cursor had been moved. The project was created ‘to facilitate social interaction and play in public space.’ You can see the GPS tracking and learn more about the project at urbancursor.com

Steven Wiltshire

Wiltshire was able to create an 18 foot drawing of New York after taking a 20 minute helicopter ride over the city. The drawing was done entirely from memory. The drawing is in scale and has incredible detail. This article makes the fact that Wiltshire has autism a big deal, but I think that anyone who can create an accurate detailed 18ft drawing from memory is noteworthy.

I came across this again recently and felt the need to blog about it. The acid trip drawings are a series of 9 drawings completed during US testing of LSD in the 50s. The drawings are done at different intervals during the 8 hours while the artist was tripping out. It is interesting to see the changes in style and medium the artist chooses at different points. This was cool to look at today, a list of artists whose work is mistaken for photography. I came across this and was intrigued. The image below was my favorite of all the work. It is a work by Juan Francisco Casas does these realistic drawings in ballpoint pen. I was surprised to learn that the works are a lot bigger than I would have ever expected, about 7 x 4 feet. I wonder if he buys cases of pens from staples...

I love how Fenstermacher describes himself, a humorist with a camera. Its hard to pick out what pictures to post here cuz I love so many of them. I think my favorite series on his website is the cat show pictures. He has images that include the marquee that announces the cat show and the following gun show, a view of the ribbons and kitty glamor pictures, a "Cat's Got Talent" booth and many views of the show kitties themselves. The cats just look so hostile and tempermental that they are just great. What is this guy doing to his cat?

I cant help but feel that this cat is getting ready to be ironed.

Also, Fenstermacher's series on ComicCon 08 is interesting. I really like how many of the images look professional, I mean that they dont look like images taken at a convention, but look very staged and intentional.

Patrick Egarter creates interesting pixel paintings. Seeing how he works, I don't think that I will ever have the patience to create work in this manner. While I am not really drawn to his paintings, I am intrigued by how he paints images that are pixelated. It just seems rather strange to create something by hand, but to style it as a computer image.

Nikon Small World Competition

This competition is focused on microscopic images from science. Images were selected based on both scientific and artistic criteria. The images that placed in the competition are gorgeous, the bright colors and geometric patterns create such an interesting subject. Looking at the images, the viewer has no idea of what it could possibly be that they are looking at. While one does not need to know the subject matter, knowing what it is you are looking at makes the work that much more impressive.

John Cake and Darren Neave, aka the Little Artists, work in many different mediums, but my favorite is the recreations of famous artworks in Lego. From Hirst to Warhol to Gilbert and George, Cake and Neave add a dash of humor to works which are already a little offbeat. I don't know exactly why Legos make everything more interesting, an example being the Brick Testament, but for some reason I find the Lego versions to be just as interesting as the actual works of art they depict.

I saw the trailer for this movie today and thought it was interesting. I love some of the quotes, "he has some interesting concepts, but I hate his work" and "please not another But Is It Art Discussion." While I will most likely not see this movie, the lead actor guy kinda annoys me, I do like the dead animal chandeliers and the art issues the film acknowledges.

Urban Camouflage is so amusing. I love the idea of a person dressed in a paper folder costume hiding out in an office supply store. I know there are artists out there who will paint themselves to match the background in which they are standing, but I am fascinated by the idea of creating a costume which doesn't mimic the background, but blends in with the surroundings.

Waller mainly uses yarn to create her works. While the subject matter of her works may not be for everyone, I see the humor in it. The variety of objects she chooses to create in yarn is interesting, Waller seems to favor animals, but some of the most interesting pieces are the ones which are not expected to be seen recreated in yarn.

This artist is strange. I keep staring at these works trying to figure out exactly what it is he does and how he does it. The images look like xrays, but also like computer drawings.
The works of plants and flowers seem to almost be technical schematics, like you can see the wiring inside. Murayama researches both botanical illustration and plant photography in his work. The final products look almost mechanical in construction.

James Turrell

Turrell is an artist who uses light to form optical illusions and challenge people's perceptions. For the past 30 years he has been working at Roden crater, a dormant volcano in Arizona. Turrell alters pieces of wall or ceiling to make the light filter in a space at a certain angle, a technique he calls skyspace. This project wont be completed until 2012. Turrell has balls, to take a volcano, dormant or not, and sculpt it into your own artwork is about as badass as you can get.

This guy is a former circus performer who now is working on his art. He hopes to bring new life to the traditional landscape images taken at these spots by photographing himself precariously balanced on the edge of a cliff.

Well that sounds just great, for this guy... I don't think I would be standing on that cliff, let alone balancing on one hand on a weird contraption thing. Maybe this is what the life of a circus performer is all about. That being the case all my dreams of being a circus performer have been destroyed.

The portraits take on a topographic like quality that you dont generally associate with a human head, unless you are in to phrenology. This guy definitely has an interesting take on the world, as well as a strange understanding of gravity. Frahm's paintings frequently have celery present as well as creepy guys in the background. The 1950s pin-up style paintings have recently brought to my attention and I am intrigued with his work. What I am drawn most to are the expressions worn by the women, they look slightly surprised, yet they seem like this is something that may happen at any time without cause. The Real Lives of Monsters

Project Description:

I am interested in making images of vintage movie monsters in everyday, homey settings. I want to take the traditional movie monster and combine it with the ideal traditional home setting.

Conceptual Concerns:

Being able to take an iconic character and insert it into an unexpected and different location.

Technical Skills Covered

Being able to create a convincing model of the scene that I am looking to create. Also to be able to utilize Photoshop to my advantage.

Formal Guidelines:

A set of 5-7 11x14 prints which will be mounted for presentation. Due date to be discussed in class.

Artistic References:

I am looking at 1950s movie set and costume designs. Dulce Pinzon’s superheroes series as well as Charlie White’s Understanding Joshua series are also artists which have inspired me for this project.

Readings:

Photoshop composite guides as well as websites and books about traditional movie monster makeup and costumes.

Grade:

The grading of this project should be determined by the success of the images to appear convincing without being immediately recognized as a Photoshop type manipulated image. The scene presented should be convincing to the viewer, well at the same time seem slightly off in a sense.

Goals List:

To create interesting and believable models.

To make images which do not immediately give off the sense that they are Photoshopped.

To use Photoshop in a productive and beneficial way.

This artist is really interesting, he does tattoo work as well as his tattoo inspired art. These works are stacks of laser cut dollar bills with many different designs. I have seen laser cut books or similar items, but substituting money for a book makes an entirely different statement.

This is quickly becoming my favorite website. The images here make me want to go to my local walmart and just hang out to see what I could find. Some of these are not so surprising, but like the cat litter one... who knows what people are thinking? The comments are great and really make the images that much better! And while I was blissfully unaware of the number of mullets that still exist today, this website has helped my realize that mullets still stand strong in the walmarts of America.

I found this artist, Emma Hack, and when I initially saw some of the wallpaper pieces, I wasn't too sure I liked the work. It wasn't unitl I saw the works which included birds, a cat and other inclusions that I became interested. Hack has models painted to blend in with the wallpaper; at times the models are hard to decipher while in other images the form can be located immediately. It is the works which have something unexpected that I find myself drawn to. In this piece the model holds a red bird which contrasts greatly with the simple black and white background of the piece. I like how Hack has pushed past the camouflaged figure and added an unexpected element of an animal, a color, or part of the body exposed, to the piece.

Willard Wigan

Willard Wigan in a micro sculptor who works with needles, pins and small nails. Wigan's work ends up to be no bigger than a match head. Some of his works fit upon a grain of sand or on the tip if an eyelash. Wigan works at night as to reduce the impact of traffic vibrations on his work. Wigan finds that he enters a meditative state in order to keep his hand as steady as possible. I love that Wigan's work is so unique, as it is some of the only art which can only be seen when it is under a microscope.

This is absolutely amazing! While painting is not known for its photographic realism, Dru Blair is able to pull off an amazing painting which is mistaken for a photograph. Seeing the step by step progression of the face as details are added just makes me that much more impressed with the talent displayed in this work.

I love how inventive these movie posters are. The designs may have nothing to do with the film, but the art is humorous, eye catching and so much different from the normal movie poster guidelines. While I may not understand why there is a cheetah wearing a pink panther mask, I do know that the poster catches my attention with its memorable concept.

I found this artist today, Peter Callesen, and I find his paper works to be fascinating! The attention to detail and creativity that he shows is inspiring. I can't help but envy the patience he must have to be able to create these works.

I saw a documentary in class about Bas Jan Ader, a video artist, and I really liked one of the quotes from him...

"thoughts unsaid then forgotten"

this just reminds me of all of the things that come up during the day, all of the ideas that pop up and then go unappreciated.
